Title: Northern Event 2011
Post by: Graham Bridle on March 23, 2011, 07:56:06 AM
We're keen to keep a northern event for the class, and Simon is trying to find a suitable event for us to attend. Seems that there are two viable options.

1. The launch of the "Great North Asymmetric Challenge" at Bass SC on May 7/8, you can see the details http://www.bassenthwaite-sc.org.uk/ (http://www.bassenthwaite-sc.org.uk/) - we were contacted directly by Bass to see if we wanted to come.

2. Filey Sailing Club Regatta - details here http://www.fileysc.co.uk/ (http://www.fileysc.co.uk/) on 25/26 June.

This is how they would fit in with our other events :-

7/8 May - Bass
14/15 May - Whitstable open (Traveller Series Event)
25/26 June - Filey
9/10 July - Thornbury open (Traveller Series Event)
16/17 July - Royal Victoria YC (Cowes)
30/31 July - Weston skiff open (Traveller Series event)

The purpose of this thread is to try to gauge support for either event, especially as last years Sunderland open attracted just 3 entries and it was on the way to the Nationals. Personally I could attend either and will attend whichever is voted for, they both look like good opportunities to show off Cherubs.

Show of hands please ...

My vote is for Filey because I prefer sailing on the sea.

Maybe we should setup a poll in the members forum?

I understand that we were contacted by Bassenthwaite as part of a mailshot sent to many class associations.

Sorry, further diary checking reveals that Bass is not an option for us, sorry Simon I know I said it was, so... I vote for Filey too. 2-0 to Filey, come on lets try and get at least 6 up there !

I vote against Bass, as it is the single worst shiftiest flukiest hell hole i have ever sailed at

As you can tell i do not have a significant opinion on this matter

Team Trim think Filey is an option. At a wedding for the May date.

Need to confirm we can make it a long weekend and combine with a visit to the outlaws, if we can then there is a very strong chance we'll be there.

For 2012 I vote for a Largs date for 2012, do they have a suitable open?

Bassenthwaite is very picturesque, great club and on-site camping. But the open-water sailing in the bay at Filey is hard to beat. Last time I was at Filey they had no clubhouse - it had fallen off the cliff into the sea or something. But that was about 15 years ago so I guess they've built a replacement by now. I'd like to do Filey, boat and baby permitting.

Excellent, I suggest we contact Filey SC to let them know we wish to attend and the results will count towards our Travellers Trophy and to ask if we can have our own start.

Nearly Stu, lets give it a few more days to solicit a bit more opinion, I admit Filey is 2 1/2 - 0 up but its only half time ....

we can do either, but for the record Filey gets my vote.

Filey gets my vote. Although I do remember not being able to come ashore mid way through the day as the tide eats the entire beach.

If this is the final concensus I will contact Filey and see if they mind us joining in.

Had a reply from the commodore of Filey today. We would be very welcome and get our own start/fleet status if we have more than 6 boats.

Hi Jason, sorry, but I dont think there are (If I'm wrong someone will correct me here) - we made a decision to go to Filey later in the year where I'd expect at least 8 of us

Come on guys, roll up roll up, we need some boats at events this year. As far as I can see the nost northern of the 4 boats listed is Ronin.

We're 60 this year, and especially when we travel places where there are many other fleets, we need to show some strength, so come on guys !

Have a double stacker and will be heading from Bristol on the Thursday PM. Coming back via york.
Can take a boat - but probably not too handy for the crew!

Looks like real life is getting in the way of sailing again. I was very much hoping to get to Filey but the pressures of too many children and not enough help have probably put a stop to that. For all you fellow sufferers out there it does get better - but not quite yet! Should be OK for the Nats. though - mother-in-law coming to stay so I can get away. Yee-haa!

What about Flat Stanley? He's somewhere about York these days isn't he? Just along the road from Filey.

The Flat Stanley has migrated to London, dont think he's ready for Filey, but we're hoping to see him later in the year.

As there are no Cheez-ists to bring I could be more than happy to stack Born Slippy up if anyone fancies making the trip to sail her!

We are planning on Thornbury and Weston but not Filey.  Our only probably Northern trip is the Birkett on Ullswater if the forecast is favourable for Cherubing.

The NOR is on the club website.
Camping is available near to the club for £7.00 for one night or £12.00 for Two nights, parking is also arranged by the club and costs £5.00 for the weekend instead of £4.50 per day in the council car park.
Anyone planning to arrive on Friday should go to the club to sort out the camping, although there will be signs up if anyone arrives late. I have been told by the club that we can set up and sort out payment etc in the morning.
We will be camping and intend on going for friday.

A fantastic weekend. Great club, B&B and camping within a 10 minute stagger from a well stocked bar with a giant balcony overlooking the sea. That combined with a sailing area that offered a 4 completely different sessions over a 2 days made for a great weekends sailing. Congratulations to Riot Van for winning the event and picking up 3rd in the Handicap fleet.

Session 1 - Ballistic. After watching several 5 tonners fail to make it more than 400m off the shore only Ellenor made the plunge. She came in when the race officer canned racing due to 35knot+ gusts and an admission that he didn't know which way to set the upwind marks due to the 50 degree gust shifts.

Session 2  - The fleet had a hotly contested round of Crazy golf (27 degress and in wet suits) which Ellenor's Dean won by 2 shots. At the 9th hole the wind had dropped and therefore we all went for a sail. The wind remained shifty, but some good grin factor was achieved by all.

Day 2.
Session 3
Sunday dawned clear and with a nice steady force 3, flat water and a gentle rolling swell. Racing was definitely on and with the strains of a Pink Floyd classic ringing in our ears we set off to the race area.

Race 1 - Elenor and Riot Van had a good tussle. Riot Van took the bullet. EJ missed the start by stopping to do some minor re-rigging and not noticing that the race office was 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

Race 2 - Elenor cut the fleet with a port flyer, Riot Van following closely behind. Having camped on the line, EJ got a slow start. At the top mark Riot van had Elenor closely in tow. Both had hoisted and gone before EJ  made the mark, a blitzing downwind leg made everyone forget the long drives to get there. During the second lap EJ found her groove and arrived at the top mark a length ahead of Elenor, after crossing twice at the top of the beat. Riot van led to comfortably take the bullet, Elenor grabbed second as EJ set herself up for another lap instead of heading for the line.

Session 4
Wind dropped over lunch and paddling was required to get off the shore and into the wind line.

Race 3 - Riot and EJ went for the bonus extra races. Riot van had a long swim, but still managed to trounce EJ (not helped by EJ detouring on every lap top cross the line - just in case).

Glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like it was entertaining. There was a small chance we could have done the Saturday but ended up using all the brownie points the previous weekend. Feeling a little less guilty now that it was blown out on the first day. Nice to hear you had some good close racing.
