Pointing or footing?
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:36:50 PM »
In my day (1980s) it was marginal whether getting up on the plane upwind paid...in my experience generally pointing won...

...but now, with a twin wire?

Does it depend on wind strength, the boat or what?

Not expecting answers tonight...I'm going to bed.

Ys its changed a bit. Assuming you have 8 knots of breeze (in less than that you can choose like the 80's) then planing isnt optional, it will come anyway !

The key is to get up to speed and get the foils working, this can cost an intial hit of a few degrees particularly if the water isnt nice or the air isnt clean, but once you are fully powered and going then its all in hard and point as high as you dare, its a knife edge on a twin wire. As the speed increases and the gusts come through you can pinch a little and snatch a lot, esepcially in the wave patterns. All the sail playing is on the main, you need a fit crew for that !

Mostly though, its all about balance and flatness, you know when you have that right !

True. As a crew, you certainly develop "cherub muscles". Not always very lady-like  ;D

Thanks guys...I've been watching the videos and have already changed the mainsheet configuration on the Tres to give Sam practice playing the mainsheet.

Really looking forward to the Blast.
