The UK Cherub Class is building on a successful 2012 season that saw new members, new boats and a 25% increase in event entries. In 2013 the fleet is already active. In workshops around the country exciting new developments have been unfolding: very different Cherubs have been built by different builders to different designs using different methods.
With such interest and variation the fleet has elected to show two very different boats at the Dinghy Show to highlight the way the class encourages experimentation, allows for different build methods and is leading the way with new ideas.

Last year the Cherub Class welcomed Clive Everest, the influential designer of the RS600, RS300, numerous International Moths, International 14’s, foilers, cats and more. At the 2012 nationals sailing with his 11 year old son in boat nearly as old he finished 2nd. Now Clive has designed the radical looking Everest 1 with its solid wings a departure; from the racks seen in most recent designs. But that’s not the only radical thing about this boat. It is built by old Moth adversary Roger Angell from a kit of flat carbon foam panels, precisely cut by water jet and assembled over a male plug. This build process makes for simpler and cheaper construction and opens the door for potential home builds in the future.

More established Cherub designer Kevin Ellway has improved on the Ellway6 design on display in the 2012 show with the Ellway7. Commissioned by Paul Jenkins and introducing a new builder into the Cherub Class, Composite Craft this boat is built using a more conventional female mould from carbon and 8mm Nomex, it sports more conventional racks and a more unusual deck layout including a half foredeck. Composite Craft have an excellent reputation building International 14s and National 12s and are keen to get involved in the class and as well as being able to supply professional quality boats they are hoping offer an Ellway7 kit that can be finished at home.

And the building doesn’t stop there. A home build E6 design with bespoke deck is under construction based on a male plug using the E6 hydrodynamic design by Kevin Ellway with an adapted top side to work with a sarcophagus build method. So alongside the professional build, the DIY option is alive, kicking and constantly evolving.

Graham Bridle, Class President and current national champion with son Eddie comments that: “All this demonstrates the strength and depth of innovation and enthusiasm within the class; We're looking forward to displaying these 2 very different Cherubs at the cutting edge of design and construction at the Dinghy Show. With increasing numbers of new people wanting to join the fleet and all the new boats in build, a calendar of travellers events and a Babbacombe nationals during Torbay week, 2013 is shaping up to be a fantastic year, and the competition is looking closer than ever.”

Chew Valley Assymetric Open Event 16-17 March 2013

Well, it was an event of two halves. Saturday saw 12 Cherubs line up for the first event of the year.

After the first lap of race 1 it seemed an upset might be on the cards as Sweet Dreamzz arrived first to the top mark and Shiny Beast was clearly first to round the leeward mark, but Marmite’s superior upwind speed soon became apparent and she went on to take the bullet convincingly. Meanwhile Eleanor was pushing hard and enjoying some match racing with Cool Beans (their first race) battling to a 3-sail photo finish.

In fact Marmite should have won all 3 races easily but missed the shortened course notiifcation in the second and third races so doing a further lap (but still coming 3rd). Credit to Tom and Andrew in Subtle whose consistent finishing put them in first place at the end of Saturday.

Conditions during Saturday went from fairly breezy to light to hailing and 30 knot squalls, which kept things interesting. The challenging gusts combined with a few dunks in chilly water shortened a couple of crew’s days. Atum enjoyed the windy periods but struggled when the breeze dropped off. It was great to see Phil and Sarah in E-Numbers while Alex seemed very happy with babysitter Laura (Andrew’s girlfriend proving very handy with a spoon and petit filou).

The fleet retired to chez Trim for recorded rugby (very disappointing) and BBQ (decidedly more satisfying) before a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” to Simon and Tim and then finding a patch of floor to sleep on (although some people were snoring happily some time before the last sausage was eaten).

Sunday was a completely different day. Despite a nice 8-12 knot forecast, the lake was a mirror until 12 noon. But the sun came out and the breeze threatened to fill in so a course was laid and the fleet made its way to the start, only for the breeze to shift and then die again before a warning signal was sounded.

So Saturday’s results stood:
1st Subtle Knife
2nd Marmite
3rd Eleanor
4th Atum Bom
5th Cool Beans
6th Shiny Beast

Sheppey Asymmetric Open Event 13-14 April – Match Report

Sheppey Asymmetric Open Event 13-14 April – Match Report

6 Cherubs pitched up at Sheppey on Saturday for some windward leeward fun along with 4 Laser 4000s, 2 ISOs and an Alto. Turnout by all fleets was lower than hoped for due to the weatherman promising some extreme wind, but at midday on Saturday the pre-race conditions were looking good.

By the start of race one, the wind and a few white horses had arrived. Born Slippy was a little late crossing the start line but as the conditions became fruitier (and her crew sobered up) she began to find her groove. Riot Van was showing her customary pace and consistency, with Eleanor and Cool Beans trying to chase her down. Some squally gusts meant everyone had a little swim, but Graham and Eddie took the first race convincingly.

Ronin came out to play for the second race crewed by Alex Cramp and Nick Pratt (great to have Alex back in the fleet after a short leave of absence), and the Badger got her paws wet; and all the while the breeze was picking up. The home team of Dean and Si in Eleanor decided to give the others a head start off the line by taking a little swim. Born Slippy in single string 97 rules mode with no T-foil was getting airborne off the waves and paced Riot Van and Cool Beans up the first beat. Graham and Eddie emerged from a mystery tea bag with a race-ending hole in the main (for which both denied responsibility) while Paul and Peter had a dodgy (and very wet) tack and retired.

Meanwhile Dean and Si showed impressive control and pace and made up for their poor start. Despite capsizing on the last leg the boys recovered quickly and Born Slippy couldn’t overhaul them, so Eleanor took line honours with Born Slippy coming in second. With the forecast for the breeze to intensify, race 3 was cancelled much to the disappointment of Born Slippy and her crew.

Sheppey laid on a superb evening’s entertainment with a challenging 115 question quiz and an unusually competitive interactive raffle. After successfully identifying and eating all the Frosties, the Cherub fleet retired to recuperate ready for another epic day, but the weather had other ideas and Sunday’s racing was cancelled. So the event ended with Eleanor in 1st, Born Slippy 2nd and Riot Van 3rd.

Many thanks to Sheppey for their hospitality and excellent race organization. Looking forward to coming back again soon.

25 Cherubs descended the hill to Babbacombe to a warm welcome from the club and the weather. Saturday’s practice day promised great things with a firm, if directionally inconsistent, gusty breeze. Sunday lived up to expectations. Near perfect conditions saw 3 closely fought races. The breeze increased with some squally showers during the third race and the changes in the gusts kept everyone on their toes. At the top of the fleet a couple of boats opted to go and fix some minor teething problems, banking on a discard. Perhaps a move they'd come to regret…?

Meanwhile the ‘97 rules boats in particular Tim and Kate Noyce in the beautifully renovated Comfortably Numb and Nick and Jo in Madge and Ade and Joe in Sweet Dreamzzz enjoyed the wind and waves.

Some start line drama saw the coming together of Shiny and Marmite resulting in Paul Clements ultimately receiving the Davy prize for the “best” capsize of the event.

Phil and Sarah Kirk showed little sign of lack of recent practice, consistently challenging the leaders. The legendary Suicide Blonde in new colours and in the hands of Jonny and Alex Harris showed good speed.

Following rumours that Graham and Eddie Bridle had got Riot Van flying there was speculation as to whether the foils would be in use during the racing. That was soon quashed as the additional foil parted company from the rest of the boat and could not be found despite Nigel’s diving equipment.

At the end of day one Paul and Peter Jenkins in Cool Beans were lying in 1st, Paul Croote and Ed Higham in Marmite in 2nd and Dean Ralph and Simon Jones in Eleanor in 3rd.

With most crews feeling they had had a good workout, a curry was the order of the day following the daily prize giving.

Day 2 dawned looking significantly lacking in the wind department. After a drift around while the race committee tried their best to ascertain which direction the little breeze there was was coming from, a postponement for lunch was called. But the wind decided not to make much of an appearance all afternoon calling for some single-handing by the smaller members of the fleet. The evenings beach BBQ was a magnificent spread and we were joined by some former (not old!) cherubbists from around the corner in Torbay, keen to join in the fun. Perhaps that was the reason that the beer supply ran dry and there was a dash to the nearest supplier for more.

Day 3 looked even less exciting. Beautiful sunshine, but not enough breeze to encourage even the most impatient and frustrated to leave the shore, unless you count paddling de-rigged Picos. A day for diving and swimming, and not in the traditional Cherub sense.

Finally on day 4 there seemed to be some semblance of a gentle breeze. The racing got underway with most crews on the foredeck and wishing for something stronger to blow the hangovers away. Newbies Mark and Alex Slatter found some good form in Sod’s Law (formerly Spanish Inquisition) and John Hamilton and Little Dan (sorry) made the most of their light weight and boat speed.

Just as the leaders finished, the wind vanished and went for a siesta. We waited. And waited. Time was running out. Drifting in the sun soon turned to diving in, swimming and the involuntary sharing of rancid shellfish. And then the club ribs obligingly delivered warm pasties to those who shouted loudest. Finally the sea breeze filled in. Hope was rekindled for those in need of a discard that the all-important 6th race would happen. Despite a fine performance by Clive and Alex Everest in A&E and a bullet in the final race for Paul and Peter Jenkins, it was Andy and Jill Peters who sneaked through to take the championship by 2 points from Cool Beans who were just 1 point ahead of A&E. Tim and Kate Noyce had a good final day to take the ’97 rules trophy from Nick and Jo.

And so to the prize-giving. Eventually. After the super-keen and apparently tireless younger members of the fleet had finished blasting. Another superb evening at the club and after dinner the traditional cherub prizes were presented. Suicide Blonde was awarded the Phoenix for best restoration and the DiggeriDon’t (for promising so much, but delivering so little) went to the Bridles for getting us all excited about foiling before promptly losing it. The Cherub Prix D'Elegance was awarded to Roland and Hayley Trim for their beautiful new home built boat Lady Virginia of Keynsham (Poppy for short). Having passed on his drinking games expertise, Paul Clements should have received the spanking paddle, but in his absence Tom Hole accepted it for his admirable demonstration of the effects of said games. This was presented in the traditional toe-touching manner using a cheese board kindly loaned by the club.

Overall, a fantastic nationals. Huge thanks to Babbacombe CSC for their warm hospitality.

Cherub Inlands Championship

Despite a forecast that looked distinctly unpromising for Sunday sailing 13 Cherubs turned up Saturday morning at Queen Mary for their Inland Championships. A number of white horses across the lake and a forecast of increasing gusts had a number of cherubists rigging up their smaller sails, a move some would come to regret. The wind allowed a good length course to be set on the smaller side of the reservoir and after a short postponement to allow all boats to launch racing began.

Interest among those in the know was high. With wind sufficient for foiling, would the one Cherub that was forging the high road leave all the others trailing, or would the fable of the tortoise and the hare literally hold water?

The three races on the day were dominated by two teams who mastered the gusty conditions Alex and Clive Everest winning the first two races after a close battle with Paul Croote and Ed Higham. The third race was held in the eye of the storm with those on small sails left regretting their choice. To give others a chance Clive fell in whilst keeping a firm grip on his quickly broken tiller extension. The light winds suited Paul and Peter Jenkins who took the bullet. As to the foiler there were some impressive bursts of speed and some good photo opportunities but the gusty wind made for some command and control difficulties.

After a good workout on the water and some impressive speeds reached on the QMSC TracTrack system the fleet headed to a riverside watering hole to replenish energy and liquid stores and wonder if Sunday would bring suitable sailing conditions.

Sunday morning dawned windy, to the extent that Team Peters took one look and went off to a nearby RS200 open. One race though was held and a select band of brave sailors launched to test themselves and their equipment to the limit. Only Clive and Alex in A&E crossed the start line. They soon came to grief on the first run trying to navigate the upturned B14s on the course and then retired after getting rigs tangled with B14. Further racing was then abandoned, though A&E, Marmite, Born Slippy, Suicide Blonde and Riot Van stayed out for some memorable blasts up and down the reservoir.
