Happy New Year

2011 is going to be an exciting year for the Cherub class, it is 60 years since the class was started in New Zealand by John Spencer, the boats have changed a bit since then but they are still providing low cost fun for sailors of all ages.

The class is planning a lot of activities for 2011 to celebrate, including a display of several boats in the hall of fame at the RYA Dinghy show, and events through the year and at the Nationals.

Cherubs at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show

The UK Cherub Class will be celebrating its 60th birthday this year and to mark the event will be exhibiting the UK Cherub Hall of Fame exclusively at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 2011 held over the weekend of 5-6 March at Alexandra Palace, London.

Hall of fame

The Cherub Hall of Fame will consist of a different Cherub for every decade with an additional 5 boats on display representing the evolution of the class over the past 60 years. Cherub Class President, Graham Bridle said “We are delighted to be exhibiting the Cherub Class Hall of Fame at this year’s RYA Volvo Dinghy Show. We know that Cherub’s have touched the hearts of many sailors over the years and exhibiting at the show will allow visitors to join in the class celebrations and see how the class has progressed over its 60 years.” The Hall of Fame will consist of:

‘Wandrous’, a Hawksworth 2 built in 1963
‘Foreman 8’ deigned in 1978 by Chris Foreman
‘Fubar’, a Bistro designed by Dave Roe in 1988
‘The Pasta Frenzy’ designed By Dave Roe in 1993
‘Ronin’ a development from Paul Bieker in 2006

Get your heart baking

Alongside the Hall of Fame, the birthday festivities will also include the eagerly awaited ‘Get your heart baking’ competition which invites entrees to submit their home baked Cherub inspired cakes in honour the 60th birthday. Cakes must be delivered to the Cherub Stand by 1pm on Saturday and judging will be held after 2pm with the winner announced later that day. The winning baker will take home an Allen 3230 GTI hoist block developed for the 49er Olympic campaigns kindly donated by Allen. Cakes will be cut and given away after at the show once the judging is complete. For full information on the competition rules click here.

Also on the stand

Amongst the inevitable heart shaped balloons the class will also be displaying the latest Cherub design ‘Eleanor. The Ellway 6 design is new for the season and is finished in a celebratory silver to add to the party atmosphere. All of the boats on show are still regularly seen racing and cruising. Visit the stand and speak to their owners who will be able to answer any of your questions as well as sharing their Cherub memories from the past 60 years.

Dinghy Show Report

We had five amazing boats on show in the hall of fame, with constant visitors and interest on all fronts, they really were a credit to the class and a fitting tribute those that have gone before us.

In the middle of that we had the Allen “get your heart baking” cake competition which generated much interest and was judged by Penny Clarke (Olympian) and Liz Adams (Allen) who took the job very seriously and were super complimentary about all the entries.

In first place was Hayley with a jubilant model of EJ, complete with carbon/chocolate twin spreader rig, laminate sails and icing waves

In close second was Phil and Sarah's Aniverser E cake.

Winning the prize for best tasting was Grraham's hearty effort

Also worth a mention was the Lucy's box rule gingerbread box filled to the brim with gingerbread hearts two for each boat on the boat list. Roland's Trifle with a model of the Flying trifle floating on top, keeping with the designs theme was Tom's dog cake, which had an unfortunate breakage on the way to the show and lost it's head. A simulated foam sandwich sample with chocolate/carbon icing, and decorated with accuratly measured densities for the sandwich filling.

The winner was eventually cut by Neil Pryde who proudly told us how he used to help John Spencer design cherubs and used to love sailing them himself.

To top it all, the main stand was never less than busy as Dean and Simon had polished Eleanor until she gleamed, and she quite rightly won Spitfire Premium Ale Concours d’Elegance for the “best in show” …. yes, the whole show above all the sideboards !

Anyway, a big thanks to all of those who lent their boats, lent their hands, brains and time - you know who you are.

Class training was held at Queen Mary Sailing Club, with excellent coaching from Pete Barton Saturday dawned bright and mild with 6 boats attending ( Ronin, E Numbers, E J, Yosagi, Shiney and Eleanor). The breeze was just about twin wireable, on the whole a perfect day for it. We started with a briefing on tacking and gybing as most participants recognised corners as a weakness in cherub sailing. Pete was keen to point out that you need to practise where to place your feet as you cross the boat, this then becomes your default when the conditions become more trying.

We then headed on to the water with a short windward/leeward course to tacking on the whistle. It showed very quickly that Stu and Nick had been practising as their boat handling was well ahead of the rest of the fleet, it was also very apparent that Eleanor is far from just a pretty face, with a good turn of speed inspite of a very rusty crew. In the morning session Andy and Jill had their small rig on and due to the lightish winds were convinced to change at lunchtime, possibly the wrong move as the wind filled in after lunch and we all had a few (or more) swims.

Dave Dobrijevic ( Dynamic Sails ) was in the rib with Pete and had some interesting points at the debrief with regards to rigs/sails and where we could all improve, thanks for that Dave this is an area we all benifitted from greatly ( although you couldn't say anything was wrong with Eleanors sails!!) Stu's highlight of the the day was Pete crawling across Eleanors cockpit on hands and knees after his speech about where to place your feet.

All in all another incredible days sailing ending with a few beers and a curry, I'm sure that all who attended had their best moments, I hope that Jason enjoyed his first cherub experiance evan if Ro forgot to mention how to drop the kite when heading towards the wall. I just need to say thankyou to Pete for his patience and teabagging,to QMSC for hosting us and to Andy and Jill for their excellent hospitality

Arup Skiffs perform well at Santander….

This week the town of Santander in Spain has played host to ISAF and the trials of six skiffs, one of which will be chosen as the boat for the Women’s Skiff event in the 2016 Olympics and possibly beyond.

Two E6 UK-Cherubs designed by Kevin Ellway, built by Aardvark Technologies and beautifully liveried as Arup Skiffs have attended the event as one of the six entries. You may recognise these as the boats as “Eleanor” and “Marmite” displayed at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, Eleanor winning the 2011 Concours D’Elegance Award.

Accompanying the boats are a team of UK-Cherub sailors headed by Roland Trim and he is supported by his employer, the engineering firm Arup.

Photos and reports from the event show the boats performing fantastically well, and although there have been days of poor weather there has also been sufficient time for the Olympic sailors to trial the Arup Skiffs, which offers a much lighter alternative to the other five contenders.

The ISAF are expected to make the decision on which Skiff will be used in the 2016 Olympics during May 2012. We wish everyone involved with the Arup Skiff Project the best of luck with the selection.

Thornbury Regatta - Report

A season record of nine cherubs travelled from all corners of the UK to attend the annual regatta at Thornbury SC.

Saturday greeted the competitors with 25+ knots of breeze and challenging launching conditions resulting in a few not making the start choosing instead to collect mud samples along the lee shoreline. Race underway was a three horse affair between Paul Croote with new crew Maff Kiddle in Auntie Dot, Phil and Sara Kirk in E-Numbers and Andy and Jill Peters in Usagi Yojimbo sporting an RS200 mainsail (surely contravening rule 7) which clearly paid off as they eventually took line honours from Auntie Dot. The Kirks suffered a broken mast putting them out of the regatta. Race 2 was eventually abandoned leaving all three to count in the series.

On Sunday the breeze built to around 18 kts by the start time and all competitors present started to beat close to the short to avoid the severn tide. While Auntie Dot stretched a bit of a lead the places behind were hotly contested between Andy and Jill Peters, Dean Ralph and Simon Jones in Eleanor, Stu Tinner and Nick Pratt in Ronin and Graham and Eddie Bridle in Riot Van. The place changing continued all race with Riot Van eventually taking second, Usagi Yojimbo third and Eleanor fourth.

Race three started similarly although with the tide slacker the fleet could use more of the Servern river and really power up for some speed. Soon the lead was contested by Auntie Dot and Riot Van with the former helping by capsizing twice on the way around, but still eventually showing superior all round speed and taking line honours.

A special mention should go to Tom Sully and crews John Maddison and Sally Harvey who borrowed Dangerous Beans for the weekend, mastering cherrubing quickly and sporting big grins on and off the water. We hope to see them again. Also returning from maternity leave were Dave and Lara Ching in the famous Shiny Beast looking good and reminding people of the speed of the beast.

Thornburys legendary hospitality was up to standard, feeding a hungry fleet on Saturday night for a mere six quid, a barrel of superb local beer and providing entertainment consisting of grown men in pink tutu’s blowing brass instruments. This gave Phil Kirk the opportunity to show his other talent of kossak dancing leaving the fleet in no doubt as to how he gets under the boom each gybe, and why Sara is always so cheerful. This regatta is surely cementing itself in the Cherub calendar and the fleet is pleased to extend its thanks to the club and recommend to anyone else they attend next year.

Cherub Nationals 2011

This year see's the Cherub fleet head to Lee On Solent for the 60th anniversary Nationals from 16th to 20th August. The week promises all the thrills and spills of ultra modern skiff racing, and some great socials off the water. The competition this year will be down to the wire with several boats all chasing the top spot, Paul Croote and Maff Kiddle team up for the first time in Antidote and will surely be hoping for big winds. Graham and Eddie Briddle have been on form all year, and light wind specialists Andy and Jill Peters are sure to be in the mix. Phil and Sarah Kirk will be keen to make up for last years dissapointment, Dean and Simon look to prove that Eleanor is more than just a pretty face and Stuberry will want to go out with a bang before he adds another 6 feet to his boat.

Competition off the water is sure to continue with a BBQ and Beach Olympics planned for Thursday evening. Events including Trolley Wheel Discus and Tiller extension javelin among others. A Welcome Reception on Tuesday, and a three course dinner with the prize giving on Friday should make this a memorable week for all who attend.

For those new to the class it's an opportunity to see the more experienced Cherubers playing with carbon. If you have a project that you would like some help with or just wish to come and join in with other's projects and learn what goes on. Directions below.

A productive weekend of stickiness for the fleet. Here is a little taster of some of the action.

This Way Up was treated to some flattering cosmetic surgery on her derriere to multiple gasps of “I have got to get me one of those” at the sight of the Multi Master in the able hands of Mr Croote.

Atum's mast is now a much safer place to trapeze from.

Madge arrived and was given a good prodding, revealing some dodgy patches of ply which were carefully removed.

A few other things were taken out too.

How do you weigh a cherub? Bathroom scales work just fine. Looks like Nick has a couple of kilos to play with.

Enormous thanks to Paul, not just for the use of his workshop and tools, but for his patience, skill and expertise as well.

Shorties and bikinis in October? Apparently so. The baking weekend of October 1st and 2nd beckoned a healthy entry of 12 cherubs set to battle it out for the 2011 Inland title. The weather on the other hand had different ideas, bringing 30 degree temperatures but no wind.

On Saturday, after a long wait eventually the race officer got 2 races in around 5-8 knots of breeze. These light and testing conditions take real skill to manoeuvre modern narrow cherubs and Race 1 was a hotly contested affair with four different boats in first place. However in the end the Ellway 5 designs took line honours crewed by local talent Andy and Jill Peters, with Phil Kirk and Nick Pratt close behind.

In Race 2, another Ellway 5 design sailed by John Hamilton and Maff Kiddle joined the front runners as did current national champions Graham and Eddie Bridle in their Banshee design. However Peters and Kirk showed great consistency in the tricky conditions to take 1st and second respectively, pushing Hamilton and Bridle down to 3rd and 4th. With time drawing on the Race officer decided two races was enough for the day.

On Sunday the crews had to wait again for wind in hot conditions. With 10 minutes to go before the Race Officer’s deadline a steady and building 5 knots of breeze arrived getting the fleet underway for a third race. This time newcomers Paul and Peter Jenkins appeared to have had their three Weetabix, leading for a lap and eventually taking a cooling swim during the second hoist. This allowed E-Numbers and Riot Van through to battle it out, both eventually overtaken by the local Peters crew showing blistering speed once again.

Race 2 was started in nearer 10 knots of breeze and on the same short, light wind course the Cherub fleet immediately headed into a pack of downwind B14’s that had started 5 minutes earlier resulting in some interesting avoiding manoeuvres. This time E-numbers built up a comfortable lead from Riot Van and Usagi. With time ticking on and drives home beckoning the Race Officer again decided two races was enough and called it a day. Undeterred however and with a sunny 15 knots blowing, most Cherubs stayed out for another hour making the most of the flat water and warm breeze.

At the prize giving, 3rd was awarded to Graham and Eddie Bridle in Riot Van, 2nd to Phil Kirk and Nick Pratt in E-Numbers and the 2011 Inland Title for the 2nd year in succession to Andy and Jill Peters in Usagi Yojimbo.

It was very pleasing to see class newcomers at this event. Atum Bom crewed by Ben, Sam and Charlie (though obviously not at the same time) were learning loads from the fleet and this was clear in their improving performances on the water. Rob and Alex finally proved that the mythical Banshee Ambulance does exist and that it can sail at speed when they get it right. Paul and Peter Jenkins (just 12 years old) showed excellent consistency pulling in a 4th overall and on occasions worrying the front runners; definitely ones to watch. And new crew Katie Miller, Young Sailor of the year, with Tom Kiddle smiled constantly even if she wasn’t always attached to the boat. Born Slippy and Slippery When Wet showed just how fast and how much fun ’97 rules Cherubs can be when the breeze picks up.

This was the final event in the Cherub 2011 Travellers Trophy and the best attended outside of the nationals all season. President Graham Bridle said “We have had an excellent response to the class since we exhibited six Cherubs at the RYA Dinghy Exhibition in March, where the Cherubs also won the Concours d’Elegance award for the best looking boat in show. Since then we have several new crews in the fleet and more new boats being built, this is an exciting time for the Cherub fleet and 2012 looks set to be a cracker!”

The next event for the Cherubs is their annual sticky weekend. Held in Weston Super Mare this is a time for people to build carbon parts, previously masts, t-foil rudders, daggerboards and all manner of accessories have been made at this weekend and it’s a great place to learn the skills necessary to be able to build ideas over the winter from guys and girls that have been getting sticky all their lives. All are welcome to come and build, help, look on or make tea. Usually a beer and a curry are standard wind-down fare on Saturday night.
